Presidential commissioner reveals how Russia systematically kidnaps Ukrainian children

Russian invasion forces use five methods to abduct Ukrainian children to Russia, said Presidential Commissioner for Children’s Rights and Child Rehabilitation, Daria Herasymchuk, Ukrinform reported on March 5.

Herasymchuk noted that the Russian invaders’ actions are systematic, and cannot be classified as chaotic and unplanned.

The Russian invaders target children whose parents have been killed or put in prison, as well as children living in orphanages. There are also cases where children were taken from families under the pretext that they will be sent to a children’s recreational camp.

The invaders then make efforts to prevent the children from reuniting with their families.

“They collect phones from children right away and don’t allow them to share the location. It’s very difficult to find a child. The Russians are dispersing Ukrainian children across their territory and constantly moving them around,” she said.

“As soon as we learn something about the location of children, they are moved to another part of Russia. That is why we have returned only 307 children out of 16,000 so far.”

She stressed the urgency to quickly address the issue of child abduction as part of the genocide against Ukrainians.

“Our goal is to stop child kidnapping immediately,” Herasymchuk said. “We need international help for that.”

About 6,000 Ukrainian children have been detained in one of Russia’s 43 “re-education” camps, said Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights, Dmytro Lubinets, on March 2.
